Our company mission is to provide our customers with higher quality wood products and customer service. We welcome you to come by our mill during our business hours to meet us and take a tour of our mill.
What we do:
The Wood Mill specializes in high quality Eastern White Pine & Eastern White Cedar products and sells to both wholesale & retail markets. Our signature product is our famous superior quality pine flooring up to 20″ wide. The Wood Mill also offers planing and kiln drying services as well as custom sawing and custom sawn softwood lumber. U-Build-It Log Home Supplies acts as our retail division for standard products, and sells both products from our mill and resells quality products from other manufactures. All of our retail products are available for sale through our online store at www.maineloghome.com.
In 1977 the Wood Mill was born in Livermore Falls, Maine by Paul Wilson. Paul was a machinist by trade, and quickly became talented at planing and working on planing machines. The Wood Mill was strictly a service company, and provided their planing services to a number of businesses throughout Maine, particularly to the log home industry.
In 1987, Mychael Bartholf, a steel worker with no background in the wood industry, purchased a portable sawmill to saw custom lumber for local builders and high end pine flooring manufacturers. This custom sawing business would soon be known as Wood Idea. Legend of Myke’s exceptional wide pine boards spread, and through hard work and dedication, Myke became one of the only sawyers specializing in top quality, knot free eastern white pine boards in America. In 1991 the Wood Idea begins selling it’s own, soon to be famous, wide pine flooring – up to 20″ wide. In order to make this unique product, Myke sent his boards to various kilns to be dried, then to The Wood Mill to have them milled into high quality flooring.
By 1999 Wood Idea had expanded to a level in which it was ready to bring more of the manufacturing process in house. To do this, Myke wanted to create the premier facility for drying and milling wide pine flooring. This process began by purchasing The Wood Mill, and soon after he had two dry kilns built which are used for drying our wide planks as well as other products. With the addition of the kilns, Myke was able to control the entire process of making your pine floor, which allowed him to produce the highest possible quality pine flooring, with unmatched consistency. When Myke purchased The Wood Mill, he also began selling its own product line of Log Home Supplies direct to the retail customer, called U-Build-It, to supplement the wholesale log home business.
In 2012 Myke and Sue were ready to retire. Wood Idea and The Wood Mill were sold to Bjarki Gunnarsson and Josh Saltmarsh, two men who shared Myke’s vision of creating the best pine floors available. Planing is still done by Nate Lesperance, an employee for over 13 years. Myke has taken on an advisory roll, and still enjoys exercising his expertise in selecting the logs used on our knot free select grade floors. The purchase officially combined the sister companies under one name, The Wood Mill of Maine.
