Our cedar log stair railings are hand hewed and made from durable eastern white cedar. Just like our flat railings, these railings measure 2 7/8″ in diameter and the lengths are completely adjustable on the job site. To adjust this, simply cut the top and bottom rails to the desired length, measuring from both ends. This is to keep the spacing as uniform as possible. All posts are sold separately!!
The top and bottom railings come with pre-drilled mortise inserts for the tenoned spindles, which makes assembly quick and easy.
Unlike the flat railings, stair rails do not have to be inserted into the posts which hold them ( although they can be, with proper drilling). We have found the easiest way to install these railings is by “toenailing” them, using 3″ to 4″ log screws. After cutting the top and bottom railings to match the angle of the stairs, place it against the post and insert the log screws, thus holding the railings in place. If you are going from a flat rail to a stair rail, you would use an end post for the top of the stairs. The flat railing would be inserted into this end post, ending that section of rails. The stair rail would be “toenailed” and screwed into that same post, starting your stair rail section.
The spindle holes on these railings are drilled at 37°, which is a 9/12 pitch. There is roughly 3° of wiggle room in either direction. If your pitch is not close to the standard 9/12, please give us a call to discuss custom angled stair rails. Custom railings typically take up to 8 weeks to complete.
